SUMMARY:Like Dandelion Dust
DESCRIPTION:Karen Kingsbury's "Like Dandelion Dust"\, based on the best-s
elling novel\, is a compelling drama that explores the different meaning
s of being a parent through the grittily realistic lives of the struggli
ng\, blue-collar Porter's\, and the privileged Campbell family. Their li
ves intersect\, intertwine and collide\, all for the love of a little bo
 y. This film is wonderfully acted by an amazing ensemble let by Academy
Award winning actress Mira Sorvino\, bravely exposes the humanity in eac
h character and reminds us that we each have the potential to be the bes
t and worst versions of ourselves at any time.

SUMMARY:House Of Numbers
DESCRIPTION:What is HIV? What is AIDS? What is being done to cure it? The
se questions sent filmmaker Brent Leung on a worldwide journey\, from th
e highest echelons of the medical research establishment to the slums of
South Africa\, where death and disease are the order of the day. In thi
s up-to-the-minute documentary\, he observes that although AIDS has been
front-page news for over 27 years\, it is barely understood. Despite t
he great effort\, time\, and money spent\, no cure is in sight.Born in 1
980 (on the cusp of the epidemic)\, Leung reveals a research establishme
nt in disarray\, and health policy gone tragically off course. Gaining a
ccess to a remarkable array of the most prominent and influential figure
s in the field -- among them the co-discoverers of HIV\, presidential ad
visors\, Nobel laureates\, and the Executive Director of UNAIDS\, as wel
l as survivors and activists -- his restrained approach yields surprisin
g revelations and stunning contradictions. The HIV/AIDS story is being re
written\, and this is the first film to present the uncensored POVs of v
irtually all the major players -- in their own settings\, in their own w
ords. It rocks the foundation upon which all conventional wisdom regardi
ng HIV/AIDS is based. If\, as South African health advocate Pephsile Mas
eko remarks\, this is the beginning of a war...a war to reclaim our heal
th\, then 'House of Numbers' could well be the opening salvo in the batt
le to bring sanity and clarity to an epidemic clearly gone awry.

SUMMARY:Four Chapters
DESCRIPTION:Chaturanga is the story of a love that is caught between conf
licting worlds of ideas. The lead protagonist Sachish fleets from radica
l positivism to religious mysticism in his quest for life's meaning. How
ever\, his search ultimately yields nothing but crushing disillusionment
. This is because he cannot square his abstract ideals with the powerful
presences of two women in his life. One of them is Damini\, a young Hin
du widow\, and the other is Nanibala\, the abandoned mistress of Sachish
's own brother. Sachish tries to convince himself that Nanibala is simpl
y a helpless woman who needs to be 'rescued' by him. Similarly\, during
his later religious phase\, he pretends that the widow Damini is merely
an enticement of Nature that must be avoided at all costs for spiritual
salvation. Chaturanga thus becomes\, after a point\, a psychodrama of un
believable cruelty. Nanibala becomes a victim of it because as a 'fallen
woman' she can only be 'saved'\, but her humanity cannot be recognized.
Damini is first given away by her dying husband\, along with all her pr
operty\, to a religious guru. She then falls in love with Sachish who ca
n accept her only without her sexuality. Set in Colonial Bengal at the t
urn of the twentieth century\, the film weaves a rich tapestry of crissc
rossing desires and moralities.Based on the novel by the Nobel Prize win
ning author Rabindranath Tagore\, Chaturanga is directed by Suman Mukhop
adhyay\, one of the most exciting and promising young filmmakers working
in India at present.Chaturanga\, based on the book by Rabindranath Tago
re\, is Suman Mukhopadhyay's second feature film. In 2005\, Suman comple
ted his first feature film\, Herbert\, based on a novel by Nabarun Bhatt
acharya. The film was given the National Award for Best Regional Film. H
e has also been conferred with awards like the Most Promising Director (
BFJA)\, Best Debut Director (Lankesh Award) and Audience Award in the Dh
aka International Film Festival. Herbert has been screened in a number o
f national and international film festivals including Cannes\, Florence\
 , Bangkok\, Osian Cinefan\, Zanzibar\, Mumbai\, Pune and Kerala. Suman h
as done his film training from the New York Film Academy\, USA. He is cu
rrently scripting 'The Hungry Tide\,' based on the novel by Amitav Ghosh
.Suman is also one of the best young theater directors working in India
at present\, having done productions ranging from European drama to majo
r adaptations of Bengali masterpieces.Chaturanga is of course a drama. I
t is a melodrama in the good sense of the term. In other words\, melos o
r music in this film creates a soundscape to accompany the drama of huma
n relations. Music expresses longings and desires that are either repres
sed or culturally and politically forbidden. Chaturanga deals with quest
ions\, which are contemporary and timeless. It interrogates our percepti
on of the human evolution. Chaturanga does not provide a single referenc
e to the contemporary political situation. Perhaps Rabindranath was tryi
ng to address deeper concerns regarding human ethos and codes of our exi
stence. In the film\, protagonist Sachish metamorphoses from a staunch r
ationalist to a devout spiritualist.Nonetheless\, there is an immense re
versal in Sachish's viewpoint at the end of the film. We\, as social bei
ngs\, have tried to solve all our moral\, social and political dilemmas
in accordance to the model of diametric opposites. East-West\, Left-Righ
 t\, Normal-Abnormal\, Discipline-Punish for example. Rabindranath himsel
f\, at one point of time\, was a victim of the similar ideological closu
res. Nevertheless\, Rabindranath undertook many journeys in his life\, j
ourneys that allowed him to transcend his previous position. We have sham
efully observed the disasters of experimentations with human beings. In
our archeology of knowledge\, we have seen the quest of human mind to at
tain an order through religion or benevolence or coercion or moderation
or collectivism. We are yet to reach any durable 'resolution.' Neverthel
ess\, any attempt to harness the spirit of human nature\, any effort to
negate the undefined areas of our inner world only reveals the holes in
the ideological models. Therefore\, Chaturanga proposes an unending jour
 ney\, timeless quest.

SUMMARY:Everything Bad Is Good
DESCRIPTION:“Conventional medicine is the leading cause of death in the U
nited States”-Peer-reviewed study by the Nutrition Institute of America.
More and more people are rejecting their doctor’s advice\, pharmaceutic
al drugs\, hospitalization\, and surgery. They simply don’t trust the sy
stem anymore and realize that the profit motive\, the merchandising of m
edical services\, and the unwillingness of most doctors to open their mi
nds when it conflicts with what they already believe are now informing t
oo many disastrous medical decisions. These progressive patients are tak
ing control of their health and looking for their own cures.Award-winnin
g BBC filmmaker Len Richmond interviews survivors of cancer\, AIDS\, and
other serious life-threatening illnesses who\, after being given a deat
h sentence by conventional doctors\, went on to heal themselves solely
with natural means (herbs\, diet\, etc). Len also speaks to renegade med
ical doctors\, Ayurvedic healers\, and Chinese herbalists who firmly bel
ieve that there is another way\, a better way.“Everything Bad is Good”\,
is an entertaining\, witty one-hour documentary that captures an exciti

SUMMARY:The Day After Peace
DESCRIPTION:The Day After Peace charts the remarkable 10-year journey tak
en by award winning filmmaker Jeremy Gilley to establish a day of Peace
on September 21st. During the course of his mission the camera follows G
illey as he galvanizes the countries of the world to recognize this as a
n official day of ceasefire and non-violence.After the official motion i
s unanimously adopted in the UN\, Gilley turns his efforts to implementi
ng the ideals of Peace Day around the world. Celebrity support from the
likes of Angelina Jolie and Jonny Lee Miller and corporate support from
 Puma\, Coca-Cola\, Ben & Jerry’s and Ecover enhances the momentum.Jeremy
’s persistence is rewarded when UNICEF\, the World Health Organisation a
nd local affected communities decide to try and use the Day to carry out
a mass vaccination against Polio\, in one of the toughest conflict area
s in the world\, Afghanistan.Jeremy asks Jude Law to accompany him to Af
ghanistan\, to help persuade the government and insurgents to ratify Pea
ce Day. The task seems impossible\, but pure human spirit in a country e
xhausted with conflict\, may just win through.

SUMMARY:The Reluctant Traveler
DESCRIPTION:A Documentary of a Journey in EthiopiaWhen Marco’s partner or
ganized a scholarly\, month-long trek across northern Ethiopia for himse
lf and a few old friends\, Marco wished him “good luck and God-speed.”
Then\, when illness prevented his partner’s participation\, Marco had to
step in and take over. Now\, instead of his usual tour of ski resorts a
nd film festivals\, this indy writer-director is taking a journey out of
his comfort zone into the unfamiliar and immense richness of a poor cou
ntry. Where White Mischief meets Sherman’s March\, Marco encounters the
extraordinary people\, history and architecture of the world’s oldest c
ountry and discovers the extraordinary challenges of group-travel\, cult
ural difference and total communication deprivation. They’re not HIS
 friends\; it’s not HIS passion\; it’s not HIS itinerary\; but suddenly\,
it’s his production and his chance to take an amazing trip\, share an i
ncredible adventure\, and return with something unforgettable. YOUR GUID
E Marco was a mid-career TV producer and fledgling film director\, when
he met and fell in love with mysterious Mr. B\, an insurance magnate on
the UK Rich List. Relocating to London and Monte-Carlo\, Marco joined t
he ranks of the international Jet Set\, but determined to use his newfou
nd resources to pursue creative goals rather than sink into a life of pa
mpered idleness. Or\, if he was going to sink\, he’d sink with laptop o
pen\, fingers typing\, emails flying and projects developing. In short o
rder\, he wrote a script and headed to LA to find a producer. As the de
velopment cycle churned\, Marco proved his creative chops by writing\, d
irecting and co-producing another short\, shot on film\, that was accept
ed into competition at Sundance. While that film ricocheted around the f
estival circuit\, Marco organized a film festival in Monaco\, devoted to
discovering and supporting emerging talent worldwide. On the festival
circuit or between homes in Los Angeles\, Miami\, London\, Monaco and My
conos\, Marco lives the high life. Yet\, here we find him-- in the midd
le of ski season and Sundance fortnight—schlepping across one of the poo
rest nations on earth\, a country without a film festival\, 5 star hotel
s or designer boutiques. In The Reluctant Traveler\, Marco is your host
and companion on a trip through vertiginous mountain gorges\, fertile\,
temperate highlands and scorching desert lowlands. In the finest verite
tradition\, Marco narrates his experience in candid\, no-nonsense\, han
d-held style. Diving into a daunting itinerary\, Marco embarks on 25 da
 ys of car-camping\, all-terrain driving\, extreme site-seeing\, and full
-cultural immersion\, leading an assortment of European eccentrics and a
film crew in a land without cell-phone reception or wi-fi connection.

ects of American immigration policy: family detention.\n\nDetention of i
mmigrant children in a former medium-security prison in Texas leads to c
ontroversy when three activist attorneys discover troubling conditions a
t the facility. This compelling film explores the role - and limits - of
community activism\, and considers how American rights and values apply

SUMMARY:In the Shadow of Hollywood: Race Movies and the Birth of Black Ci
 nema
DESCRIPTION:They were called race movies: films produced during the first
half of the 20th century as a direct response to Hollywood’s negative p
ortrayal of Blacks in cinema. Race movies starred all-Black casts\, were
intended for all-Black audiences and were often the work of pioneer Bla
ck filmmakers\, like Oscar Micheaux and Spencer Williams. Unfortunately\
, all but a fraction of the 500 race movies made were lost. Now the era
of early Black cinema has been resurrected in this haunting new document
ary. Featuring footage of recently rediscovered race movies\, “In the Sh
adow of Hollywood” captures the sounds and images of a bygone era\, prof
iles the fascinating lives and careers of Black filmmaking pioneers and
screen stars\, and explores the lasting legacy of this misunderstood and
  nearly forgotten film genre.

SUMMARY:Herskovits At The Heart Of Blackness
DESCRIPTION:The 20th century Anthropologist Melville J. Herskovits re-def
ined black history and black people\, making it possible for a people fo
rmerly despised as “Negroes” to pride themselves as African-Americans. Y
et along the way\, he undercut the work of African American social scie
ntists\, dismissing their work as ‘non-objective’\, laden with political
agenda. The great irony is that in the end\, Herskovits own work would
inspire manyBlack Power activists of the late 1960s. Brilliant\, high-mi
nded\, pioneering\, ambitious\, Herskovits’ life and work raises questio
ns powerfully relevant today. What is “objective study” and when does it
become politicized? What happens when the scholar becomes the powerbrok
er? What are the consequences when we deny a people the right to define
themselves? Who controls the production of knowledge\, how and why? Brin
ging rarely seen archival footage together with interviews from leading
scholars of race and culture\, Herskovits At the Heart of Blackness depi
cts an ongoing struggle over who has the power to understand\, describe
and\, ultimately\, define the contours of human cultural history. What k
nowledge can a Palestinian contribute to Israeli history and Jewish self
-identity? What can a German say with auhtority about Turkish culture an
d world view? How might being a powerful insider affect the depiction of
the disenfranchised outsider? And to what purpose and effect? The film
blends conventional interviews with original animation sequences\, to gi
ve questions and ideas surprising urgency. The film’s dramatic reenactme
nts were created using a “photo collage” technique inspired by Chris Ma
rker’s film “La Jette” (basis for the Hollywood sci-fi thriller “12 Monk
eys”). Hundreds of photographs were used to create these dramatic sequen
ces. Creative editing takes the viewer back and forth between the histor
ical and the contemporary\, to bend and sometimes break the “fourth wall
’ and remind the viewer that the film itself with its own politics and
point of view – is part of the discourse we are asking the viewer to inv
estigate. Vital Pictures producers Llew Smith and Christine Herbes-Somm
ers are winners with California Newsreel of the 2009 Alfred I. duPont-Co
lumbia University Award for their series Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality
Making Us Sick. Their newest documentary Herskovits At the Heart of Bla
ckness will premiere on the PBS series Independent Lens in the 2009-10 s
eason. Their documentaries have tackled race ideologies (Race: The Power
of an Illusion)\; how economic injustice creates unequal health\, espec
ially for people of color (Unnatural Causes) and the politics of the pro
duction of knowledge (Herskovits At the Heart of Blackness). Vital Pictu
res creates films that engage social justice issues through careful rese
arch and inventive storytellling\, that stimulate and illuminate wider a
 udiences.

SUMMARY:Anywhere USA
DESCRIPTION:In a trailer\, a woman who used to be an alternate on her hig
h school tennis team beats her boyfriend senseless once a week. Meanwhil
e\, an eight-year-old girl experiences an awakening that makes her wonde
r if the guy next door driving the ‘89 Subaru is\, in fact\, the guy she
thinks he is. On the other side of the tracks\, Kobe beefsteaks and man
icured gardens go hand in hand\, a man of privilege has an epiphany at t
he dinner table that ultimately leads to a contusion and a revelation. T
old in three subtly related segments\, featuring a cast of mostly non-pr
ofessionals and exploring passive racism\, geo-political vagaries\, good
intentions\, faith and disappointment\, this deeply personal film manag
es to tread the lines between vulgar and humane\, between absurd and ten
der\, and finds its heart in the story segment featuring the director’s
own daughter and a man living in a van.
